QUASS & PRICE INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME
Two prominent Iowa broadcasters were honored with the 1999 Hall of Fame award at the
IBA Summer Convention held June 2-22 in Cedar Rapids. Grant Price and Mary Quass
were inducted into the IBA Hall of Fame at the 1999 Annual IBA Awards Banquet, held
June 21, at the Collins Plaza Hotel & Convention Center.
The IBA Hall of Fame award is presented annually to individuals who have made a lasting
and significant contribution to the community, the state of Iowa, and the broadcast
industry.
For nearly two decades, Grant Price was the News Director for the WMT Stations in
Cedar Rapids. He left in 1972 for KWWL-TV in Waterloo, where he served as News
Director for 18 years. In 1990, he retired from KWWL and became a member of the
Wartburg College faculty in Waverly, becoming the first full-time broadcast faculty
member to serve the college. Five years ago with funding help from the IBA he began a
comprehensive project, recording the history of Iowa broadcasting. He established the
History of Broadcasting in Iowa Project, a collection of archives and videotaped
interviews being housed in the Vogel Library at Wartburg. He is a Professor Emeritus at
the Department of Communication Arts and continues to be the driving force behind the
History of Broadcasting in Iowa Project, supported by the IBA and Q-Mac Endowment
Fund.
Mary Quass, began her broadcasting career in l977 as an account executive at KHAK
Radio in Cedar Rapids. Starting in 1982 she served the station as Vice President and
General Manger, and in 1988 formed Quass Broadcasting Company. In 1998, Quass
Broadcasting merged with Capstar Broadcasting Partners to form Central Star
Communications.
In 1999 Quass was named Broadcaster of the Year by Radio Ink Magazine--receiving the
prestigious Radio Wayne Award, for exceptional leadership and achievement in radio.
Quass holds office and serves on numerous community boards and committees including,
Mount Mercy College, Firstar Bank and Kirkwood Community College Foundation. She
has served as a Board Member of the NAB, President of the IBA, and Iowa FOI Council
and Treasurer of the Quarton-McElroy/IBA Endowment Fund.
Both Price and Quass were recognized for the many significant contributions they have
made to Iowa broadcasting and the broadcast industry as a whole.
