Betty Thomas and Keith Kirkpatrick Inducted Into Hall of Fame
Betty Thomas receives Hall of Fame Award from Bill Grady
The Iowa Broadcasters Association has inducted longtime Iowa broadcaster and radio legend, Betty Thomas, KDTH-AM in Dubuque into the Iowa Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame, in honor of her many years of service and contributions to Iowa broadcasting.
The Iowa Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame award recognizes Iowans who have made a significant contribution to their community, the state, and the broadcast industry.
Thomas enjoyed a broadcast career at KDTH in Dubuque spanning more than four decades. Upon the death of her husband Bill (Thomas) Nankival, a local radio personality in 1966, Thomas took over the hosting duties of his radio morning show "The Cracker Barrel" where she remained for 32 years. During her years on the air, Thomas’ listeners contributed thousands of recipes and household hints which were compiled into five books. Her monthly newsletter featuring selected recipes from the show was sent to subscribers in all fifty states.
In honor of her husband, Thomas was involved in the Tri-State Independent Blind Society personally raising thousands of dollars for the organization. He has been the recipient of the Dubuque YWCA Certificate of Leadership honoring her role in promoting the economic, cultural and civic well being of the women in Dubuque. She has received the Certificate of Merit from the Dubuque Knights of Columbus acknowledging her faithful service to the community. She has also received the Hometown Builders Award and has been recognized as a local author by the Dubuque Public Library. She has helped raise thousands of dollars for the American Lung Association and Albrecht Acres, a camp for the physically and mentally handicapped.
In retirement, Thomas remains active and involved in the Dubuque community, writing a monthly column for "The Golden View," a senior citizen’s publication, volunteering time at her church and the local senior citizen’s center.
