Rick Sellers Named 2000 Broadcaster of the Year

Rick Sellers, Owner and General Manager of KMRY radio in Cedar Rapids was named the 2000 Broadcaster of
the Year by the Iowa Broadcasters Association at their Annual Awards Banquet, held June 26 at the University
Park Holiday Inn in West Des Moines.
Sellers began his radio career in high school, broadcasting from his basement. He graduated from Miami
University of Ohio with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Marketing Communications.
In 1975 Sellers became Program Manager for KCRG-AM in Cedar Rapids and Broadcast Instructor at
Kirkwood Community College. He moved to WMT radio in 1975 as Promotion Director where he remained for
the next 22 years, serving the station as Program Director/Operations Manager, then Vice-president/part-owner,
and finally General Manager. During his years at WMT the station received three NAB Marconi Awards and
was one of the first to receive the coveted NAB Crystal Award for Community Service.
Sellers left WMT in 1998 to purchase KMRY in Cedar Rapids, where he is currently Owner and General
Manager. He’s a member of the Cedar Rapids Downtown Rotary Club, a Trustee for Junior Achievement and
Big-Brother-Big Sisters, and a board member of the American Red Cross. He is past president of the Cedar
Rapids Area Marketing Group, and an Executive Board member/President Elect of the Cedar Rapids Freedom
Festival. He is a member of the Communications Board for the Midwest Area Housing Partnership, and the
Cedar Valley Amateur Radio Club.
The Iowa Broadcaster of the Year award recognizes Iowa radio and television managers, who have provided
exceptional leadership to their station, and service to their community.
